Space IQ: Q3 2026

The World Ran Out of Launch: Your Q3 Space IQ Takeaways

Space Capital on the Nasdaq Tower: $22 Billion Invested in the Space Economy in Q3 2026

The easy button is going away.

The quarter opened with China catching a rocket booster in a net at sea and closed with Starship in orbit. In between, the space economy ran out of launch capacity and the world responded. Three things defined Q3: the launch shortage became an investable crisis, Europe posted its best quarter on record, and sovereign demand set the pace across every layer.

What This Quarter Reveals:

Since 2010, the commercial space economy has run on one assumption: a Falcon 9 would be there when you needed it. That assumption expired in Q3, and capital moved faster than policy to replace it. The same force shows up in every layer of our Infrastructure, Distribution, Applications framework. Governments with urgent requirements are now the anchor customer, and countries that spent a decade renting access to orbit are paying to own it. With $92.5 billion invested through Q3, 2026 has already passed 2025’s full-year record and is on track to cross $100 billion for the first time.

Key insights:

  • SpaceX stopped taking rideshare reservations beyond late 2028. On September 28, Starship reached orbit carrying 26 next-generation Starlink satellites for its first customer, SpaceX itself. The largest supplier of a scarce input is leaving the market, and access to orbit is now a board-level conversation at many of our portfolio companies.
  • Scarcity funds competition. Pure Launch raised a record $7.8 billion in 2026, and its 58 rounds already tie last year’s record. Stoke Space raised a $1 billion Series E to accelerate Nova. Blue Origin took outside capital for the first time in 26 years and told CNBC the round was oversubscribed. The White House set a goal of 1,000 launches and reentries a year from U.S. facilities by 2030, roughly five times today’s rate.
  • New entrants reached orbit or recovered boosters on three continents in a single quarter. China netted a Long March 10B booster at sea and landed Zhuque-3, India’s Skyroot flew the country’s first private rocket to orbit, and Isar Aerospace became the first commercial rocket to reach orbit from Western European soil. None of them will stay pure launch companies for long. That’s the Launch+ thesis we introduced last quarter: access to orbit is a strategic advantage, and the companies that have it move into more lucrative markets as soon as they arrive.
  • Europe raised $6.3 billion, a record for the second straight quarter and 28% of global investment, its highest share since 2019. Its $13.5 billion year to date already beats any prior full year. Helsing’s $1.8 billion Series E led a defense wave alongside Quantum Systems, TEKEVER, and Kraken, and more than half of the quarter’s 16 new unicorns are based outside the U.S. Europe learned what the U.S. learned with GPS: the fastest way to build a commercial space economy is a government customer with urgent requirements.
  • Infrastructure raised $11.5 billion across 84 rounds, its second-largest quarter on record, with a record 39 growth-stage rounds taking 90% of the capital. Hadrian’s $1.37 billion Series D for automated defense manufacturing led the layer, and GEOINT now accounts for 42% of 2026 Applications investment. The U.S. carries a complication. Golden Dome was funded through reconciliation, so the continuing resolution that began October 1 leaves less than $400 million of the $17.5 billion FY27 request in base authority. Underwrite the requirement, not the appropriation.

The full report breaks down the quarter across Infrastructure, Distribution, and Applications. If you read one thing this quarter, read the launch data. It explains why the shortage exists, who is being funded to fix it, and why the answer is no longer a single company.
